Striking A Balance In Development
Striking A Balance In Development

His Majesty the Sultan speech during the opening of 6th LegCo meeting mentioning the importance of coming up with more urgent measures to overcome delays and shortcoming in achieving the country's goals.
With the Sultan's titah, we hope everyone and not only the LegCo members will have high spirits, determination and hard work to achieve the country's goal as what His Majesty has tirelessly been emphasising. We don't want "in one ear, out the other ear", to happen.
I was surprised when some LegCo members made a comment that we have achieved a lot since the 1st LegCo meeting, giving examples of road building in Temburong and the new wooden jetty at Bangar.
Is this a great achievement after five years?
I thought a great achievement is like building a skyscraper, twin towers or a monorail system and so on, just like when we first built Jerudong Playground Park, Empire Hotel and JPMC and so on. This is what other countries achieved in five years including Brunei ....before the LegCo was introduced in 2004. The thing that really caught my attention was His Majesty making a wise comment "there must be a balance between physical development and spiritual development".
To me, this is the "formula" not only for Brunei ministers to adopt but also for the world to look into in order to successfully develop a country.
His Majesty also said "It is true other countries may have progressed but in that progress; there are those who cannot sit comfortably, cannot enjoy sleep because their country is wrought with unrest, war and in-fighting with crime, drugs, corruption and others".
The monarch further added "These make all the development that have taken place meaningless, and that is why I have never tired of speaking about education".
I totally agree with His Majesty. What's the point of having the country developed if we live in fear of high crime, drugs, full of sin and with people who no longer fear God?
Just look at the developed countries. Even people who use monorail get raped/robbed everyday. Murder gets committed daily. Workers or students frequently go on strike.
Even worse, opposition political parties promote violence to achieve their goals and some lead to bloodshed, rebellion and civil war. The development mentioned here is definitely meaningless. We had better live deep in the jungle which is more peaceful.
Well, that's the place our forefather went to in order to escape from the cruel ruling of the Japanese during WWII.
His Majesty said "Education is an everlasting investment that must not be neglected". His Majesty added "Its policy must be healthy and its system must be correct. Good policies and systems can bring about spiritual development and not weaken it"
Education meaning here is not only about religious education but also about economics, science and others.
Imagine a scenario where Bruneians have started to work hard and the focus is on education and research... in the next 20 years, Brunei could be the top producer of sophisticated robots in the world. Impossible to achieve? It is up to us to decide!
